Yannan Gao is a first-year doctoral student at the School of Education, specializing in Learning, Cognition, and Development (LCD). She is interested in the role of parental practices in reducing the achievement gap between students from different socioeconomic background. She wants to understand the positive parental practices in facilitating students from families of lower socioeconomic status to excel at school and to develop family interventions.
Yannan received her bachelor's degree in Psychology with Comprehensive Honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She did her Honors thesis on motivating academically underachieving students through instructor's feedback in a utility value intervention in college classes. She has been awarded the 2016 Provost Ph.D Fellowship.
