Coloring Achievement: How Youth Explain Inequality and Opportunity in America

Investigator: Gil Conchas (with Leticia Oseguera)

Funding: UCI Chancellor's Fellowship

This book project focuses on how students' perceptions of race and racism explain inequality and opportunity in America. The book will address the structural and cultural mechanisms that shape Asian, Black, Mexican, and White students' aspirations and expectations about their post-high school careers and college options. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, we will explore the interplay between individual, group, out-of-school, and school level factors and influences that shape success and failure among middle school, high school, and college youth.
