Under this grant, a new UCI ArtsBridge program is being established as an extension of the ongoing work of the ArtsBridge America network. ArtsBridge America (ABA) is currently housed at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in the Center for Learning in the Arts, Sciences and Sustainability (CLASS).
A unique benefit of the new UCI ArtsBridge program is the implementation of a research-based arts integration curriculum that was developed and implemented by CLASS in the San Diego School District between 2009 and 2012.
The San Diego CLASS model made innovative use of visiting artists (or ArtsBridge scholars) in theatre and dance, who utilized research-based arts education methods to engage students in both arts and literacy development. The artists co-taught with classroom teachers, who became familiar with the curriculum and carried out follow-up activities between artist visits.
The UCI project will employ this model with limited English proficient students in low-performing Orange County schools, with the added dimension of having university graduate and undergraduate students join the visiting-artists in the schools and collaborate with the classroom teacher, while also assisting with the research component of this project.
The UCI ArtsBridge project will make the results available to other ArtsBridge America sites.
