Reed Buck - determined, questioning, empathetic - is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing his single subject teaching credential in biology.
Buck received the MAT Leadership Award at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.
The MAT Leadership Award honors a student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities.
Growing up in a middle-class suburban neighborhood, I never considered issues of equity and injustice," Buck said. "I eventually completed my bachelor’s degree in neuroscience at UCLA and was left unsure of my path. However, after doing some teaching for the UCLA Library, I realized my passion lay in education - not just teaching science, but bringing equity and inclusivity into a field that has traditionally excluded many people. I am deeply grateful to receive this award, which will promote my continued education into fostering inclusivity in science classrooms."
