Subject Matter Requirement
Applicants must verify subject matter competence in one of five ways:
- CSET passing score report in all required subtests for the credential type.
Applicants using the CSET to satisfy the subject matter requirement will be required to submit one passing subtest with their application. - Official institutional verification of completed Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP). SMPP is completed at the undergraduate level at an approved institution.
- Academic Major in subject they will teach
Table of acceptable degree majors- Multiple Subject: Liberal Studies, Liberal Studies: Urban Education, Liberal Studies: Elementary Education, Liberal Arts, Elementary Education
Optional: Applicants may upload a word document with a statement that they had met Subject matter requirement through an approved major title. Alternatively, we will review the transcript to confirm that the SMR requirement has been met for this option.
- Multiple Subject: Liberal Studies, Liberal Studies: Urban Education, Liberal Studies: Elementary Education, Liberal Arts, Elementary Education
- Coursework: completion of a course addressing each of the Commission-adopted subject matter domains for each subtest. Coursework can be used to pass any or all subtests. This option is different from the Subject Matter Waiver Program. An admitted MAT student may request a subject matter evaluation to meet this requirement by completing this form. It is recommended that you begin with the Light evaluation and move to the Full evaluation if needed.

If any domain is not with confidence, it is highly recommended to take the CSET exam in your desired subject area. - Combination of coursework and examination(s): completion of coursework and/or passing of the CSET subtests may meet or exceed the completion of the subject matter domains for all subtests. This would combine options 1 and 4 to meet the Subject Matter Requirement. For example, if your subject requires three subtests you could pass the exam for two subtests and use the coursework option to demonstrate proficiency for the third subtest
