Computing for a Just and Sustainable Future
|
The Computing for a Just and Sustainable Future Conference for Educators brought together teachers and education leaders from across Southern California, including directors of the UC Science Projects at UCI, UCR, UCLA, and UCSD, to explore how computing and climate education can promote equity, sustainability, and student empowerment.
The conference was co-organized by UC Irvine School of Education Professors Asli Sezen-Barrie and Symone Gyles in collaboration with the UCI Teacher Academy. Associate Professor and Stacey Nicholas Endowed Chair of Environmental and Climate Change Education Sezen-Barrie delivered the keynote address, sharing her research on creating equitable, action-oriented climate education that empowers students to address environmental challenges. Her core ideas emphasized teaching climate change across multiple disciplines and contexts, embracing community-based, participatory learning, and prioritizing emotional well-being to address climate anxiety and foster hope. |
