Ph.D. in Education

Ph.D. in Education
Picture
The UCI School of Education offers a world-class doctoral program featuring the benefits of an internationally acclaimed research and teaching faculty, a supportive scholarly community, and selective cohorts admitted annually. Students can choose to study and research in one of three areas: Educational Policy and Social Context (EPSC), Human Development in Context (HDiC) or Teaching, Learning, and Educational Improvement (TLEI).

The Ph.D. in Education program is structured for the student’s academic success. Doctoral students receive quality mentoring, relevant coursework and opportunities for research apprenticeships on major projects. Students graduate with publications and conference presentations that position them for work in academia and research.

RESEARCH

AREAS

Educational Policy and Social Context (EPSC)
Human Development in Context (HDiC)
Teaching, Learning, and Educational Improvement (TLEI)
Drawing from economics, sociology, developmental psychology, and anthropology, EPSC faculty and students use a range of quantitative, qualitative and mixed method approaches to understand impacts of existing policies, to design and evaluate new policy and intervention models, and to understand the relationship between policy making and implementation.
Drawing on education, cognitive science, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and anthropology perspectives, faculty and students conduct lab experiments, engage in field-based studies, and use longitudinal data sets to examine human development in a wide range of areas. Research in this area contributes to building theory on human development across the lifespan and intervention efforts.
Drawing on a range of research perspectives, TLEI faculty and students investigate teaching and learning in schools, communities, online settings, and informal learning contexts, across a range of disciplines (e.g. science, mathematics, computer science, and literacy), using case studies, design-based implementation research, research-practice partnerships, evaluations of learning outcomes, and text and data mining, to ultimately improve the life chances of children and adults through education.
