The California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) has named three University of California, Irvine School of Education students as recipients of its 2023 Bilingual Teachership Award.
Estefania Hurtado, Shirley Nieto, and Melanie Macias will all be individually honored with $2,000 scholarships as “university students seeking a teaching career and pursuing a bilingual teaching credential” during CABE’s annual conference in March. The three students are a part of the Bilingual Authorization Program (BAP) within the Multiple Subject Master of Arts in Teaching + Credential (MAT) program at the School of Education. BAP seeks students in the MAT program who are bilingual in English and Spanish, with candidates being assessed on their Spanish language proficiency (reading, writing, listening and speaking) before being placed in a dual immersion classroom with a bilingual master teacher. They join 14 other members of BAP who have received the scholarship award since 2011. |
With multiple top-10 rankings in 2022 by U.S. News and World Report, the UCI School of Education is at the forefront in preparing future educators with the tools they need to lead their own classrooms in the future. Historically, candidates within the BAP and MAT programs who successfully complete their student teaching placement in a dual immersion school are highly sought after for employment.
