A message from Dean Frances Contreras
Welcome to the University of California, Irvine School of Education, where we pride ourselves on improving the educational equity, access and outcomes for individuals of all backgrounds, from infancy to adulthood.
Our school was built with the vision of studying education through a variety of disciplines. Our curriculum and research draw on perspectives from neuroscience, economics, sociology, psychology, anthropology and ethnic studies. Our diverse and internationally recognized faculty are thought leaders in these fields, and they conduct research that, collectively, examines the entire lifespan. As of July 2023, our faculty were principal investigators on more than 120 grants whose combined total exceeded $131 million.
Our research extends beyond the UCI campus. We are home to dozens of partnerships with K-12 school districts, community colleges, organizations and nonprofits across Southern California, and host professional development workshops and conferences throughout the entire year. This strong focus on our community helps generate novel research and allows our talented faculty, staff and students to identify and address problems of practice. Together, we are improving educational opportunities and achievement for students and communities across Southern California.
Through our multi-faceted effort, we are reimagining how a school of education can – and should – serve its students, campus and community. We are working to serve as a national model for putting research into practice and for practice influencing research, while simultaneously serving as an exemplar of inclusive excellence in our programs, research, pedagogy, partnerships, centers, curriculum, admissions and hiring practices.
I am honored to lead such a diverse, vibrant and influential school. I encourage you to peruse our website to learn more about our innovative programs, cutting-edge research, and accomplished faculty, staff and students, and alumni.
Sincerely,
