Doctoral student named Outstanding DECADE Representative
Ph.D. student Valery Vigil won an Outstanding Diverse Educational Community and Doctoral Experience (DECADE) Representative Award for the 2021-2022 academic year. The award recognizes Vigil’s accomplishments and contributions to DECADE, including her leadership of the DECADE council, creativity regarding event ideas, and ability to work with students, staff, and faculty.
“Many thanks to Professor Rossella Santagata for her dedication and support in her role as the DECADE Faculty Representative for the past two years!” Vigil said. “With her support, I have successfully planned and executed more than 20 events for our school community in my first two years as a doctoral student.” Vigil also thanked her faculty advisor, Professor Mark Warschauer for encouraging her involvement in service and mentorship efforts during her time in the Ph.D. program. |
“I understand that this recognition will be very important as I seek further opportunities, including a faculty position,” Vigil said. “I'm looking forward to continuing my service and community-building efforts this summer and beyond. I will be serving as a graduate student lead for the 2022 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship as one of three graduate students selected for this position, as well as a Competitive Edge peer mentor for an incoming doctoral student. I also plan to continue my roles in the School of Education DECADE leadership and community building committees.”
“Valery’s enthusiasm for building community is contagious,” said Santagata. “She is thoughtful and caring and always goes the extra step to organize events with attention to every detail. These skills will serve her well in her career as an education scholar, and we are very lucky to have her as part of our community.”
During the 2021-2022 academic year, Vigil has led the planning and hosting of the Welcome Back Pizza Social, HTML & CSS Workshop, Grab-n-Go Goodies, Conversacion y Compania, DECADE Town Hall, Mentoring Undergraduate Research Assistants Workshop, Postcard Writing Social Event, and Navigating the Academic Job Market events, and two Secret Buddy Gift Exchanges, along with coordinating the food purchases, pickup, and reimbursement. Additionally, she serves as a DECADE PLUS Leadership Coach, supporting seven undergraduate first-generation students from diverse backgrounds in their transition to university.
