How long is the program? Can I do this program part-time and/or online?
This a five-year, full-time doctoral program that requires in-person participation. Course work for the program takes 2 or 3 years that includes a directed research sequence. Students are expected to advance to candidacy in their third year. The normative time for completion of the Ph.D. is five years. This program cannot be combined with a full or part time job, or done online. Students will be involved either in research or in assisting with university courses as a teaching assistant or reader. can I get credit for courses from my Master’s program?

Currently, the Ph.D. in Education program provides five years of financial support. Doctoral students will be given a combination of Research Assistantships, Teaching Assistantships or Fellowship that will cover tuition, fees (including health insurance), and living stipend for the academic year. All support is contingent on meeting university and program expectations and standards in both academic performance and employment. What are the various forms of employment for graduate students at UCI?
Is there funding for attending conferences and professional development activities?
Yes. Additional educational support may be offered by the School of Education for doctoral students in good academic standing. is there on-campus housing?
Yes. UCI guarantees placement in on-campus housing for four years for individual student or families. Students must maintain good academic standing to continue to qualify for the guarantee. I am a parent. Does UCI offer child care support?
Yes. Graduate students can receive up to $1,100 in financial support per quarter for eligible child care expenses during the academic year (fall, winter, spring quarters). Am I required to submit a GRE score if I have a Master’s degree? What is the minimum score
requirement for GRE? Yes. All applicants are required to submit an official score. There is no minimum campus GRE score requirement. Applicants are expected to do their best. The admission committee looks at all aspects of the application. We seek to admit students who fit very well into our Areas and faculty interests. Although GRE scores and undergraduate GPAs are important, we are more concerned with the fit of the applicant to our program goals and the overall quality of the application. If you are concerned about your GRE score, we recommend you address this in your application materials to help the admissions committee in their consideration of your application. May I submit more than three letters of recommendation?
The admissions process specifies three letters. The letters should be from academics who can attest, with specific examples, to your ability to proceed successfully through the Ph.D. program and write a culminating dissertation. The admissions committee members carefully read the information in the letters of recommendation so be sure your recommenders understand the program you have selected and the criteria for being considered for admission. I am an international applicant and studied at an English language university in my country.
DO I NEED TO SUBMIT AN IELTS OR TOEFL SCORE TO COMPLETE MY APPLICATION? As an admission requirement, International students must submit a TOEFL or IELTS scores taken within the past two year. The School of Education requires these scores even for students who have received a bachelor's or master's degree in the U.S. or an English speaking country, as the scores determine students' eligibility to serve as a Teaching Assistant, which may form part of our funding package. When can I submit my application? When is the final deadline?
The application for the Ph.D. in Education program opens September 4 for the following Fall admission. Since the program starts in fall quarter each year, students are not normally admitted for winter or spring quarters. The priority deadline is December 1. Applications received after December 1 will be accepted on a space available basis. The application will remain open until February 1. What kind of writing sample can I submit?
The academic writing sample can be a thesis chapter, research paper, or academic article. The admission committee review writing samples as a way to assess the applicants writing skills and depth of research experience. When can I expect to hear a decision on my application?
Each program has its own schedule for making admissions decisions. The School of Education’s Ph.D. program reviews completed applications on a rolling basis. A general deadline for admission offers is April 15. Having trouble with your Slate application?
