Ethnic studies seminar provides tools, knowledge to navigate ethnic studies in K-12 classrooms
June 1, 2023
In response to the state’s requirement to incorporate ethnic studies curriculum as a graduation requirement, new teachers and teacher candidates from the Master of Arts in Teaching + Credential (MAT) and UCI CalTeach programs convened for a seminar in the spring to discuss and explore ethnic studies curriculum, pedagogy and methodologies.
The School of Education-hosted event, held in collaboration between the school’s UCI History Project, CalTeach and MAT programs, provided teachers and teacher candidates with the tools and knowledge to navigate ethnic studies in their K-12 classrooms. Participants also heard from keynote speaker and School of Education Associate Professor Emily Penner, a researcher who has studied ethnic studies curricula and its benefits to students’ educational journeys.
