Biography

​​Dr. Kimberly Burge has been teaching courses in arts and media education for the Minor in Educational Studies, Teacher Credential programs, Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Ed.D. programs at UC Irvine since 1988. She is a former Director of the MAT Program. In addition to her current teaching in the School of Education, she supervises teachers in Art. 

Dr. Burge received her Doctorate in Educational Administration in the UCI/UCLA Joint Ed.D. program, an M.A. in Art from UCLA, and a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts from UCI. She earned both Secondary Art and Administrative Services credentials at UCI. 

Prior to coming to UCI, Dr. Burge was a teacher and mentor teacher in the Irvine Unified School District where she taught courses in the visual and performing arts and developed programs at the district level that employed full-motion video teleconferencing in teaching and learning for K-12 and university level students. She also was a Fulbright Program exchange teacher in Art to England.

Dr. Burge continues to support arts education in the schools as a member of the Board of Directors of Arts Orange County (the California Arts Council presence in Orange County), a member of the Orange County Museum of Art Board of Trustees’ Education Committee, and an advisor to VSA (formerly Very Special Arts). She is the Director of Outreach for the UCI Center for Learning in the Arts, Sciences, and Sustainability and the Director of UCI ArtsBridge. Previously, she was the co-director of ArtsCore, a three-year professional development program for more than 100 secondary visual and performing arts teachers, and served as a co-director of UCI TCAP (The California Arts Project).

Conferences/Publishing

​Dr. Burge has made numerous conference presentations on the use of arts and media in teaching and learning. She is a visiting editor for the UCI Center for Learning in the Arts, Sciences and Sustainability online peer-reviewed journal. She also paints and has been shown recently in juried shows in the Santa Ana Artists’ Village and in the Woodstock Opera House in Illinois.
