Biography
Susan Guilfoyle earned her M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction and her teaching credential with a BCLAD emphasis in Spanish at the University of Southern California (USC). While a student at USC, her area of study was in bilingual literacy in urban settings. In a panel discussion, she presented her research at the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE). She was also a Merit Scholar and a participant in the Latino Teacher Project. She received her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). At CSUF, she was a research assistant for the Spanish department, assisting in the research and editing of Spanish medieval plays. Additionally, she assisted in collecting data for various ongoing research projects at the Social Science Research Center.
As a bilingual educator for an elementary school in the Los Angeles area, she taught English language learners in their primary language, Spanish. She earned Teacher of the Year honors and later became a literacy specialist at her site. As a literacy specialist, she demonstrated and supported standards based literacy lessons for all students in K-5 classrooms. She also supported teachers with curriculum and instruction in bilingual instruction, sheltered English instruction and English only classrooms; provided and implemented a literacy intervention program for struggling readers and an enrichment program for gifted learners in fourth and fifth grades; planned, implemented and supported curriculum for the after school program; planned literacy events for the community; received and managed numerous grants to support and promote success in literacy.
As a lecturer, Ms. Guilfoyle teaches in the Multiple Subject Teacher Credential Program. She also serves as a field advisor to multiple subject candidates. As the BCLAD coordinator, she assesses students’ Spanish fluency in reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and oral language ability. She also coordinates events to support BCLAD students in the program throughout the year. Her BCLAD students have attended professional bilingual conferences (e.g., CABE), visited various dual immersion programs in the local area, and have attended guest-speaking engagements with experts in the field of bilingual/ dual immersion education. She has also served as a preschool literacy consultant under the William F. Gooding Even Start Family Literacy Programs Title I Grant.
