School of Education’s Master of Arts in Teaching + Credential and CalTeach programs receive full accreditation
The educator preparation programs receive a unanimous decision from the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing.
The UCI School of Education earned full accreditation for its educator preparation programs from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), an agency within the executive branch of the California State Government to ensure integrity, relevance and high quality in the preparation, certification and discipline of state educators.
The School’s programs receiving accreditation for the seven-year cycle under this decision are Single Subject – which includes the undergraduate UCI CalTeach and Master of Arts in Teaching + Credential (MAT) postbaccalaureate pathways; MAT Multiple Subject; and Multiple Subject Bilingual Authorization. Programs and credentials offered through the Division of Continuing Education were also accredited – including Preliminary Administrative Services Credential, Clear Administrative Services Credential, and Reading and Literacy Added Authorization. |
“This decision underscores the quality of our programs and the hard work of our faculty, staff and students at the School of Education,” said Virginia Panish, director of the MAT program. “I’m so appreciative of the support of all our school partners and alumni who participated in our site visit interviews.”
The UCI programs received a unanimous recommendation from the site visit in early May, based on a thorough review of documentation and stakeholder interviews. The CTC Committee on Accreditation agreed with the site team’s recommendation and approved the accreditation in late June for all programs with no concerns or stipulations.
During the site visit, the CTC team conducted 65 individual interviews, and group interviews with a total of 331 stakeholders – which included faculty, program leadership, staff, university supervisors, mentor teachers, K-12 administrators, current candidates, alumni, employers of UCI graduates and advisory council members.
The CTC’s final report highlighted the collaborative nature of all of the programs, both at a program level and across the institution. It also cited the programs’ collaborative work with the School of Education’s Teacher Academy, Center for Educational Partnerships and the Orange County Education Advancement Network in sharing resources, strengthening school partnerships and supporting public education.
The MAT program is a graduate program that draws on research-based and equity-centered practices to prepare highly reflective, critical educators and leaders.
UCI CalTeach is a highly diverse math and science undergraduate-based, and community- and justice-centered program whose graduates serve mostly minoritized students with an exceptionally high retention rate. It is jointly sponsored by the schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Education.
