Researcher and lab manager receives staff scholarship
Guicheng "Ariel" Tan, researcher and manager of the Working Memory and Plasticity Lab (WMP), was a Spring 2022 Mike Puritz Career Enhancement Scholarship recipient. The $500 scholarship will aid Tan’s professional development plans, such as presenting at and attending the 2023 Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) Annual Convention in February 2023.
“SPSP is one of the largest organizations for social and personality psychology, which provides direct resources for my research goal,” Tan said. “As an immigrant, my research investigates how biculturalism relates to intergroup bias and social cognition, and attending this conference would allow me to connect with scholars with similar interests, strengthen my study design, and prepare me for my grad school application journey.” Tan thanked Susanne Jaeggi, professor and director of WMP, for making her aware of the opportunity. “I've brought up with Susanne how I felt discouraged, because attending conferences can be so costly, as most travel grants are designed to aid current students or early career scholars. I mentioned that I'd love to be exposed to opportunities that would enhance my career development as research staff. Susanne saw the call for application and forwarded me the opportunity. Without her letting me know about this, I wouldn't know about applying.” |
“I have been very impressed that apart from doing all the great work for our lab and her ongoing projects, Ariel finds the time and the energy to devote to her own research, collaborating with faculty at other institutions, presenting at conferences and writing papers which will prepare her well for the next chapter in her life, namely, graduate school,” Jaeggi said. “As she points out, staff members like her have to be creative to find funding to attend conferences, given that any conference-related travel awards almost exclusively focus on students and post-docs. Thus, this award is a great opportunity for her to use towards the dissemination of her research projects.”
Tan also acknowledged UCI Staff Assembly for providing scholarships geared towards staff. “Financial constraints associated with professional opportunities — such as conference, certificate, and workshop costs — make professional development inaccessible to a lot of people, so thank you UCI Staff Assembly for thinking of and supporting us!”
Through donations from UCI staff, faculty, the UCI Retirees Association and the community, the Mike Puritz Staff Assembly Career Enhancement Scholarship Program helps UC Irvine career staff enhance their career development and make an impact at UCI by furthering their educational goals, whether in pursuit of an academic degree, Continuing Education courses, workshops, webinars, conferences or other classes.
