Enrollment in New Bachelor of Arts in Education Sciences Exceeds 300

The UCI School of Education welcomed 20 members of the freshmen class who have selected the new B.A. in Education Sciences as their undergraduate major. They will join the more than 280 current students who have either switched this fall to the new Education Sciences major or added Education Sciences as a second major. School Welcomes Incoming Class of Ph.D. in Education Students

Fifteen new Ph.D. in Education students are joining the 61 doctoral students currently enrolled in the program. The five men and ten women are arriving with experience in education, administration, engineering, and the military. They represent six different countries and speak nine different languages. Findings Released from 5-Year IES Goal 3 Evaluation of ST Math Program 

Professor George Farkas announced completion of the 5-year Goal 3 Evaluation that studied the Spatial Temporal Math program (ST Math), a supplementary math learning software created by the MIND Institute for elementary students. Two publications, co-authored by faculty and doctoral students, describe the impact on elementary students' mathematical skills.

AERA Open, Edited by 3 School of Education Professors, Accepting Submissions

AERA Open, the American Educational Research Association's newest research journal, is accepting submissions. Edited by three UCI School of Education professors - Associate Dean Mark Warschauer and Distinguished Professors Greg Duncan and Jacquelynne Eccles - the journal is encouraging state-of the art interdisciplinary research in emerging areas such as educational neuroscience, behavioral economics and learning analytics. Learn more. | YouTube Video

AT&T Gifts $300,000 in Support of Pathway Intervention Project

The UCI School of Education received a $300,000 gift from AT&T to support its recent $11 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement for The Pathway Intervention Project. The Project is aimed at helping English Learners (EL) successfully complete courses in core academic subjects and meet the rigorous California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

Mentor Teachers Prepare for Co-Teaching with UCI Teacher Candidates

Eighty mentor teachers participated in the UCI School of Education's 2014 orientation at the University Club on September 15: "Preparing New Teachers: The Co-Teaching Model." For the 2014-2015 school year, over 200 Orange Country teachers have volunteered their classrooms and their expertise as mentor teachers to guide teacher candidates during their year-long teaching apprenticeship. UCI Writing Project's Summer Youth Program Serves More Than 2,000 PreK-12 Youth

The 2014 UCI Writing Project concluded another successful Summer Youth Program, the 30th since the program was introduced in 1984. Over 2,000 children participated in one or more three-week sessions that included mornings of writing and afternoons devoted to math, science, and art or sports/fitness. Learn more.​

Alumna Gail Spivack Donates Scholarship for Bilingual Candidates

Alumna Gail Spivack, Ph.D. (Master of Arts in Teaching, 2010) has donated a scholarship for teacher candidates preparing for a career as bilingual educators. Dr. Spivak praised the School's "outstanding quality of bilingual education and 100% placement rate in California schools." Alumna Awarded 5-Year Knowles Science Foundation Teaching Fellowship

UCI School of Education alumna Brenda Minjares (Master of Arts, 2014) has been awarded the 5-Year Knowles Science Foundation Teaching Fellowship. Selected from a pool of 180 applicants, Ms. Minjares will be supported in her professional development while teaching at Escondido High School in Escondido, California.

Ph.D. Student Awarded $50,000 Grant from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Ph.D. in Education student Elizabeth Miller has been awarded the "Early Care and Education Scholars: Child Care Graduate Student Research Grant" by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant will support her dissertation research: "Use of Spanish in Head Start and Dual Language Learners' Academic Achievement." Learn more.

Ph.D. Student Named Newkirk Graduate Student Fellow

Ph.D. student Jennifer Long has been named a 2014-15 Newkirk Graduate Student Fellow. Ms. Long will receive $8,000 in support of her doctoral research studying ecohydrology citizen science at Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach. Learn more.​

Receives $15,000 Promotion of Doctoral Studies Scholarship

Ph.D. student Sarah Gilliland has received the $15,000 Promotion of Doctoral Studies II Scholarship from the Foundation for Physical Therapy to support her dissertation research: "Physical Therapist Students' Clinical Reasoning and Characterizations of Practice." Learn more.

2014 Ph.D. Student Poster Session Highlights First Year Research

Ph.D. in Education students entering their second year of study showcased their research findings from their first year research at the Fall 2014 Poster Presentation. Emulating the poster sessions of the American Educational Research Association, the doctoral students explained their methodology and discussed their findings with faculty, students, and guests from the community during the two-hour session. 2014 Poster Presentation Program.

Student Research Featured at The Academy Charter High School Science Poster Session

Tenth grade students from The Academy Charter High School (The Academy) in Santa Ana showcased their fall science research during a poster session for the public on September 19th. UC Irvine reviewers evaluated the students' presentations on infectious diseases for clarity, organization, and presention skills.
