Carol McDonald Connor Named UC Irvine Chancellor's Fellow

Professor Carol Connor, who joined UCI's School of Education January 4 as the first professor recruited in the university's High Impact Hire Initiative, has been named Chancellor's Professor.

The 21st Annual UCI Writing Project Conference, held December 16 at UCI's Student Center, attracted 650+ K-12 educators. The conference theme was "Teaching Practices and Instructional Strategies that Position Students Closer to Reading and Writing Excellence".

Professor George Farkas has been notified that two of his co-authored articles are "Top Read" for 2015 in peer-reviewed journals, one in Educational Researcher, one in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis. Abstracts.

New Partnership to Improve  STEM Teaching and Learning

A new partnership between the School of Education, School of Biological Sciences, and the Crystal Cove Alliance is bringing together undergraduates teaching, the learning sciences, environmental science research, and community outreach. The partnership's goal is to improve STEM teaching and learning and to prepare the next generation of stewards of biological resources. Read more.

Professor and PhD Graduate Edit New Anthology

Professor Gilberto Conchas and PhD Alumna Briana Hinga have edited a new publication: Cracks in the Schoolyard: Confronting Latino Educational Inequality. Their book features achievement cases that depict Latinos as active actors - not hopeless victims - in the quest for social and economic mobility.

The School of Education is now an official Chapter of the UCI Alumni Association. As a Chapter, the School will receive support with alumni events, marketing, and financial issue and will focus on increasing membership.

CalTeach Undergrads Lead Physics Assemblies at Area Elementary Schools

CalTeach Physics Majors Martin Lopez and Snow Lu (picture left) are traveling to area elementary schools to host UCI Physics assemblies designed engage students in demonstrations and activities that promote STEM education. Both Martin and Snow will graduate next year with their STEM degree plus teacher credential earned through the 4-year CalTeach Science & Math Program. Read more.

Teacher Credential Scholarship Recipients Honored During School Reception

Thirteen students in the Master of Arts in Teacher/Teacher Credential Programs were honored for academic and leadership achievement. Five categories of scholarships were awarded: Mary Roosevelt Honor Scholars in Teaching and Learning, Dean's Scholarship, Bilingual Teacher Leadership Award, Owen Thomas Memorial Scholarship, and SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union Scholarship (recipient Tiffany Wong pictured left). Read more.

PhD Student Recognized for Assistance to UCI Students and Applicants Affected by Chennai Floods

Ph.D. in Education student Shafee Mohammed, an optometrist by training, led a successful petition drive to push UCI deadlines for fee payment for currently enrolled students from Chennai and for submission of admission documents from Chennai applicants affected by recent floods. Read more.
