650+ Educators Attend the UCI Writing Project's 21st Fall Conference

The UCI Writing Project hosted its 21st Annual Conference for Teachers with the theme Helping Students Read and Write about Complex Literary and Nonfiction Texts in the Era of the Common Core. Over 650 educators from throughout Southern California, a record attendance, participated in a variety of workshops and attended two keynote addresses. Learn more.

Distinguished Professor Greg Duncan is being honored by the Society for Research in Child Development with the 2015 Distinguished Contributions to Public Policy and Practice in Child Development Award. Faculty Collaborate on Virtual Inclusion for Chronically Ill Children

School of Education faculty are collaborating with UCI researchers and specialists at Children's Hospital of Orange County in piloting a new effort to support chronically ill children with "telepresence robots." Read more.

Based upon the number of times accessed online, "Which Instructional Practices Most Help First-Grade Students With and Without Mathematics Difficulties?" (by Paul Morgan, George Farkas, and Steve Maczuga) was the Third Most-Read AERA Journals Article of 2014. Read more.

Faculty and Students To Present at SRCD Biennial Meeting

Twelve faculty, 18 students, and 5 recent doctoral graduates will represent the UC Irvine School of Education at the 2015 Biennial Meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), to be held March 19-21 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Faculty Publish Special 10-Year Edition of Journal for Learning Through the Arts

Associate Professor Liane Brouillette and Ed.D. graduate Maureen Burns have published their 10th volume of the Journal for Learning through the Arts. Reports Dr. Burns: "This 10th volume, edited by a team from the U.S. Department of Education, reflects 10 years of work. We are fortunate that as early adopters of the electronic journal concept we benefited from the terrific tools and support provided by UC's California Digital Library."

In keeping with the festive mood as UC Irvine celebrated its 50th year, the School of Education hosted a hospitality booth in Aldrich Park and an open house in the School. The open house featured a series of interactive workshops attended by alumni, current faculty and students, and community partners. Learn more.

Keith Curry Assumes Leadership of Alumni Executive Council

Keith Curry, CEO of Compton Community College District, has been named Chairperson of the School of Education's new Executive Alumni Council. The committee has been established to nurture alumni ties and encourage mutually-beneficial interactions between alumni and the School. Alumni are being invited to the next event for current students and graduates, scheduled for Saturday, April 18th. Alumni Event Flyer.

Two MAT Students Receive Dean's Scholarship

Araceli Brambila (left) and Rebecca Hicks (right) have been awarded the 2014-15 Dean's Scholarship. Both recipients were selected by faculty as having demonstrated through their scholarship and activities a commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of students.

Teachers of Tomorrow Plan Spring Celebration for BA in Education Sciences Students

The Executive Committee of the Teachers of Tomorrow Club met on January 29th to plan a spring celebration for students majoring in the new B.A. in Education Sciences. Currently 420 undergraduates are enrolled in the Education Sciences major, with 720 applications received so far for fall 2015 admission.
