Doctoral student awarded 2021 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation SREE Summer Fellowship
The Bill & Melina Gates Foundation awarded fourth-year doctoral student Gabe Avakian Orona a 2021 Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness (SREE) Summer Fellowship. Orona will receive $8,000 to support his research investigating measurement and assessment in higher education as these relate to skills deemed necessary by employers.
“Grades and institutional prestige cannot be relied upon to draw accurate inferences regarding the skills students have acquired during their time in college,” Orona said. “The project seeks frameworks that align student learning outcomes and communicate skill development to the wider workforce.” Orona will be working with co-investigators Nicole Ilfill, senior program officer at the Bill & Melina Gates Foundation, and Assistant Professor Adela Soliz of Vanderbilt University. |
The research team will assess workforce readiness metrics, skill-based education programs, and intellectual development across community college and four-year institutions.
Orona is specializing in Educational Policy and Social Context (EPSC) for his doctoral studies. His interests include conceptualizing and constructing, designing, and analyzing assessments consonant with the aims of higher education, and using these to evaluate student learning outcomes. Much of his work centers on issues of validity, and the appropriate use and interpretation of test scores.
Dean and Professor Richard Arum serves as his advisor.
