Biography

Jennifer Cabrera received her B.A. in Child and Adolescent Development with a minor in Psychology at the California State University, Northridge in 2017.

As an undergraduate student, Jennifer was introduced to research exploring the relationship between peer social interactions, self-presentation, and self-esteem among young adults from diverse ethnic backgrounds. She studied the impact of social media on the self-esteem of adolescents and young adults. Specifically, she focused on exploring peer relationships among adolescents via social media and how their expressed identities shaped who they became both online and offline.

As a doctoral student, Jennifer engages in research analyzing online peer networks and academic achievement among Latina doctoral students. Specifically, she studies how online social platforms can serve as supportive spaces for Latina students’ success in higher education. Additionally, she is part of the Connected Learning Lab at UCI where she works with Mimi Ito, Candice Odgers, and Stephen Schueller on multiple projects both increasing the inclusivity of young Latinx students in STEM and analyzing online supportive spaces for Latina adolescents.
