Biography
Daniel Hodge is a first year doctoral student being mentored by Dr. Brandy Gatlin. His research interests are interdisciplinary but they take aim at the manifestations of power mechanisms and social control within K-12 educational spaces. Daniel is interested in redefining what it means be "educated" in historically white spaces, and he hopes to focus on the ways in which Black Students attempt to regain agency inside of current social institutions.
Daniel earned his bachelor's degree from Gonzaga University and went on to claim his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Notre Dame. As an undergraduate at Gonzaga, Daniel sat on the Student Advisory Board to the President and took part in a number of initiatives aimed at bringing diverse faculty to GU's campus. With help from the University President, his team took the lead in kick-starting a discussion to fund a brand new Cultural Studies Minor in coordination with the Women's and Gender Studies Department.
Currently, Daniel aids in teaching 8th Grade English in Santa Ana, while he is pursuing his Ph.D. in Education from UC Irvine. His research will focus on how school environments can foster transformative spaces for the mental health of Black, Native American, Latino/a, and LGBTQ students.
Outside of school, Daniel is the Educational Coordinator and Board Member of Forbes Sports, a social enterprise focused on bringing a holistic educational experience to student-athletes in the greater Sacramento area.
