Biography

Joseph Wong is a doctoral student at the University of California, Irvine who studies Teaching, Learning, and Educational Improvement (TLEI) while specializing in Digital Learning and Media under his advisor, Dr. Lindsey Richland.

Joseph is a researcher motivated by questions at the intersection of science education, digital media, and higher-order thinking. More specifically, he is interested in the cognitive mechanisms underlying how instructional media technologies such as online learning, virtual and augmented reality, and digital interactivity, can improve student motivation, engagement, and foster transferable skills. As an NSF graduate research fellow, Joseph's career goal is to bridge together his passion for digital media with science education to design effective learning experiences representative of today’s 21st-century student learning behaviors.

Currently, Joseph is a lead researcher on the NSF Grant: Impacts of COVID-19 Out-of-School Stressors on Executive Function and E- Learning. This project examines undergraduate learning during an unprecedented pandemic and explores how students' motivation, engagement, and COVID-19 stressors affect online teaching and learning. Furthermore, Joseph is designing online courses that are cognitively grounded in effective instructional design models to better support distance learning environments that are more equitable, scalable, and wide-reaching.

Over the last two years, Joseph was working at UC Irvine as the Director of Videography for Science Education Media on the National Science Foundation-funded project ESCAPE. He oversaw the 4K Ultra HD pre-production, production, and post-production digital media workflows for online teacher professional development training integrating arts with science education. This curriculum is currently being implemented to hundreds of third, fourth, and fifth-grade students in Title I elementary schools across Los Angeles and Orange County school districts.

Prior to ESCAPE, Joseph worked at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco as an informal science educator. Working alongside the visualization team in the Morrison Planetarium, he recorded, edited, and produced original full-dome and portable dome productions for both museum guests and Title I middle school students. He also worked as a planetarium host and museum exhibitor, teaching the Academy’s guest about various scientific phenomena from planetary sciences to human evolution.
