Biography
Jasmine Nation is a postdoctoral scholar, working with Associate Professor Hosun Kang on the NSF Career Project called Expanding Latinx Students' Opportunities to Develop Complex Thinking in Secondary Science Classrooms through a Research-Practice Partnership. With a team of university scientists and teacher-researchers, she is helping develop and implement inclusive science curriculum at three local high schools. She is excited to gain more experience in formal science education, and continue to work in the realm of Research-Practice Partnerships that promote personally relevant and equitable science experiences for Latinx students.
Jasmine also has over five years of experience working with informal science programs and university-community partnerships. Programs she has helped create feature visits from local scientists and focus on the creative, expressive, and collaborative side of STEM. As part of her doctoral research at UC Santa Barbara, she created and led a makerspace program at a local teen center integrating science, technology, and art into social action projects. She was also the co-founder and coordinator of the Curie-osity Project where 4-6th grade girls learned about science through researching, interviewing, and writing a book or creating digital stories about female scientists at UCSB. Jasmine continues to be interested in programs that broaden the definition of science, and is passionate about getting more students from underrepresented backgrounds to participate in and contribute to STEM fields.
Before pursuing a career in STEM Education, Jasmine majored in Spanish and Ecology in undergrad at the University of Arizona. After college, she spent a year teaching English to indigenous leaders in Manaus, Brazil on a Fulbright Scholarship. She also enjoyed working for nonprofit organizations in California and New Mexico as a teacher, community organizer, and case manager. Learn more at: https://www.jasminemcbeath.com/
