Biography
Nestor Tulagan is a National Science Foundation Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Education at UC Irvine. Dr. Tulagan’s primary research interest are family academic socialization and motivational processes within racial/ethnic minority families, with a focus on examining within-group heterogeneity in these processes. His dissertation research examined the parental strategies that African-American mothers use to foster 7th graders’ academic achievement and the differential socialization in these processes based on adolescent gender and youths’ baseline academic abilities.
Dr. Tulagan is collaborating with Professor Sandra Simpkins and Associate Professor of Teaching Alessandra Pantano in the Department of Mathematics on an NSF-funded project exploring how Latinx families and organized after-school activities can build partnerships to foster students’ math motivation and achievement.
Dr. Tulagan earned his Ph.D. in Education (specialization: Human Development in Context), M.A. in Education, and B.A. in Psychology and Social Behavior at UC Irvine.
