Professor Sandra Simpkins has been named the 2023 recipient of the Mavis Hetherington Award for Excellence in Applied Developmental Science by the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 7: Developmental Psychology. She will receive the award at the annual APA meeting next summer.
“I am truly honored to receive this award. One of the great joys of my work is to engage in research that contributes to psychological science and also helps support our community,” Simpkins said. The Mavis Hetherington Award for Excellence in Applied Developmental Science this award individuals who have made outstanding contributions to applied developmental science and helped promote the well-being of children, families, and groups or organizations. |
Through her research, Simpkins addresses positive youth developmental processes, the influence of families and organized activities on those processes, and how these processes vary by social position factors – such as ethnicity and gender. Her current projects focus on how youth’s organized after-school activities support their positive adjustment into adulthood and how families help support adolescents’ STEM motivation, activities and choices.
Among her accolades, Simpkins was a 2021 fellow with APA and 2020 fellow with the Association for Psychological Science. For her mentorship, she was named an inaugural mentor in 2021 for Society for Research in Child Development’s Towards 2044: Horowitz Early Career Scholar Program, received a Faculty Mentorship Award for Inclusive Excellence at UCI in 2019 and an Outstanding Faculty Mentor of an Undergraduate Honors Thesis recognition at Arizona State University in 2014. She has also been a National Science Foundation CAREER Award Recipient and a William T. Grant Foundation Young Scholar.
