Three organizations – the National Association for Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates, International Literacy Association and the Western Association of College and University Business Officers – elected California Alliance for Minority Participation-UCI Director Pheather R. Harris, Professor Young-Suk Kim and Assistant Director of the Center for Educational Partnerships (CFEP) Patricia Anderson, respectively, to appointments on their boards.
Pheather R. Harris named NAMEPA President-Elect
The National Association for Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates (NAMEPA) announced Pheather R. Harris as President-Elect. In her role, Harris, director of the California Alliance for Minority Participation-UCI at CFEP and Principal Investigator on a roughly 3-million dollar NSF grant to advance inclusion in STEM out of the Division of Undergraduate Education at UCI, will assist the president, Whitney B. Gaskins, in the discharge of her duties. She will officially become president at the end of Gaskins’s term. Harris has published numerous articles on access, diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM and has worked in postsecondary education for over two decades.
“As a Black woman in postsecondary education that understands the critical importance of combating systems of inequity in STEM, and the ways in which each of us play a role in addressing disparate outcomes in STEM degree completion, I am excited to continue to contribute to the work of NAMEPA to advance inclusion in this new capacity,” Harris said. “I previously served as a NAMEPA Board Member, and Region E Chair, prior to this position. NAMEPA has an incredible leadership team, and active membership across the nation that are all keenly focused on making STEM more equitable and inclusive.”
NAMEPA is a nationwide network of university administrators, faculty, deans, pre-college educators and industry professionals who are committed to the implementation of programs and policies to broaden participation in STEM by cultivating diversity, access, equity, and inclusion in engineering specifically, and STEM more broadly. The association’s efforts to attract, retain and graduate engineers from historically underrepresented minoritized populations has helped to quadruple the number of underrepresented engineers in a field that has traditionally lacked access, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Patricia Anderson named WACUBO DEI Chair
In May, the Western Association of College and University Business Officers (WACUBO) appointed Patricia Anderson, assistant director of CFEP to a three-year term as chair of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Board Committee after serving as a member of the committee since 2021. As the DEI chair, Anderson sits on the board of directors while leading the organization’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts which are now embedded in its values statement, strategic map, and practices and selection of volunteer leaders.
Last year, Anderson was selected to chair the host committee for the annual conference at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Calif., in April 2024. “Welcoming higher education business officers from across the country to Southern California will likely draw our largest WACUBO annual conference attendance with pent up demand for professional development and networking post-pandemic,” Anderson said. “I hope the Anaheim conference will be an exciting opportunity for colleagues to learn together and grow professionally from our high quality keynotes and fellow business officers and business partners sharing their best practices. We have several exciting events to engage attendees in new and imaginative ways inspired by the Disneyland parks and resort location.”
Since 1937 WACUBO has offered business officers in the western region opportunities to develop professionally, to identify solutions for issues affecting higher education, and to share their expertise with their colleagues in institutions spanning 14 western United States, three Canadian Provinces, Mexico and other Pacific Rim nations. WACUBO is one of four regional associations (Central, Eastern, Southern and Western) making up the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). Headquartered in Washington D.C., NACUBO is well known for its informational resources and professional representations of the needs and interests of higher education.
