School of Education Celebrates
10th Anniversary Gala on May 20, 2023
The top-ranking school will recognize its 10 years of impact in education at the event, as well as honor Michael Matsuda and Victoria Vasques ’81 for making a difference as exceptional leaders.
May 3, 2023, Irvine, Calif. — The University of California, Irvine School of Education is thrilled to announce its 10th anniversary gala, which takes place on May 20, 2023, in Newport Beach, Calif. This event celebrates the School’s rise to its top ranks and decade-plus impact on education across the region and state through its excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement.

We have built an exceptional faculty and staff, conducted research that continues to impact the field of education, empowered students to become education game-changers, and created cutting-edge programs and co-designed research. These strengths have enabled the UCI School of Education to authentically engage with our community in meaningful ways. Since its establishment as a school at UCI in July 2012, the UCI School of Education has seen a meteoric rise in its rankings. It is currently No. 8 school of education and educational research in the world and, nationally, No. 4 among public graduate schools of education and No. 11 overall — according to U.S. News & World Report. The School also boasts a world-class student population and an internationally recognized faculty who have received major accolades — including national academies and honors, top rankings in their field, among others.

The UCI School of Education gala will also honor Michael Matsuda and Victoria Vasques ’81 as two exceptional leaders who are making a difference in education.
Matsuda, superintendent of the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD), will be receiving the Outstanding Community Partner Award for his exceptional collaboration and commitment to partnering with the UCI School of Education. Matsuda is a nationally recognized 21st-century educational leader known for innovation, entrepreneurship and compassion. Under his leadership, AUHSD has built a new educational model incorporating “reverse-engineered” career pathways in partnership with higher education, private, and non-profit sectors, which have extended and transformed educational opportunities for students.

Vasques — owner and chairwoman of Tribal Tech LLC and Cowan & Associates Inc., who is also a UCI Foundation ex-officio trustee and School of Education alumna — will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for her notable contributions to the education landscape throughout her career. For more than 30 years, Vasques has been an advocate for American Indians — leading education reform, health care and advancing energy initiatives. Her career in public service includes leadership roles for the Office of Indian Education, U.S. departments of Education and Energy, the White House Initiative on Tribal Colleges and Universities, and President’s Commissions, among others.

"Their ongoing efforts to improve educational opportunities for youth is inspirational and embodies the values of the UCI School of Education, and we are grateful for their partnership and leadership."
The gala celebration will also feature interactive experiences that showcase some of the School’s cutting-edge research and efforts that are creating a transformational shift in education. Experiences include education about green spaces in relation to climate change, engaging families with STEM in everyday spaces, and utilizing artificial intelligence to promote mentorship and early childhood learning.
