U.S. News & World Report
The UCI School of Education is No. 4 among public schools and No. 11 graduate school of education in the publication’s annual report
Irvine, Calif., April 25, 2023 — The University of California, Irvine School of Education is recognized as the nation’s No. 4 public school of education for a second year in a row and No. 11 graduate school of education, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2023-24 annual rankings, published online today.
According to the recent report, the UCI School of Education is Top 3 in funded research per faculty member and Top 9 in funded research. The School of Education is also distinguished as No. 8 in the world among education and educational research schools, according to the publication’s global rankings released in October 2022.
“The UCI School of Education’s top rankings by the U.S. News & World Report is a testament to our excellent record of research, academic programs, talented staff and scholarly community. Our impact on the education sector at all levels and our expanding partnerships across the region and state illustrate our transformative work in and out of the classroom from early childhood to higher education and beyond,” said Frances Contreras, UCI School of Education dean and professor.
“This recognition is due entirely to our dedicated, collaborative and thriving community of faculty, staff, students, alumni, supporters and partnerships. We are collectively committed to the current and next generation of educators, scholars and leaders — as well as producing and cultivating cutting-edge research that leads to a far-reaching change in practice and policy,” Dean Contreras added.
The School of Education offers three notable degree programs, including its Ph.D. in Education, Masters of Arts in Teaching + Credential and Bachelor of Arts in Education Sciences, that prepare students for education careers in academia, nonprofit, government and the private sector.
The School of Education boasts a multidisciplinary, world-class research and teaching faculty, who are among the top in their field as cited by leading publications. Several faculty are members of the National Academy of Education (Distinguished Professor Jacquelynne Eccles, Distinguished Professor Greg Duncan, Professor Mark Warschauer and Chancellor’s Professor Emerita Deborah Vandell), National Academy of Sciences (Duncan), and American Academy of Arts and Sciences (Distinguished Professor Judith Kroll and Duncan).
The School of Education is addressing the most critical challenges and conversations in education through its interdisciplinary research and teaching programs, as well as its 30-plus labs, initiatives and centers.
Among the School of Education’s efforts to connect research with the education community at the regional and state level, its Orange County Educational Advancement Network (OCEAN) has established more than 50 partnerships in the broader region, which includes more than 15 school districts. OCEAN bridges School of Education researchers with a network of K-12 schools, educators, leaders and community partners with the goal of advancing learning and education practices.
The School of Education is also improving access to higher education for underrepresented students through its Center for Educational Partnerships (CFEP). For more than 25 years, the center has partnered UCI with schools, school districts and communities to provide support for K-12 and college students in attaining higher education. CFEP also provides support for educators and school leaders to improve instruction by providing professional development opportunities through the Teacher Academy.
