Three School of Education faculty honored at Celebration of Teaching
The awards recognize faculty, instructors and teaching assistants who have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching at UCI.
Three School of Education lecturers – Barry Goldenberg, Susan Guilfoyle, and Janice Hansen – were honored at this year's UCI Celebration of Teaching. The annual event, hosted by the UCI Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation, recognizes the faculty, instructors, and teaching assistants who have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching at UC Irvine. Nominated by peers, students, and staff, award winners exemplify exceptional teaching.
Goldenberg won the 2022 Lecturer of the Year award. A first-year faculty member, he said, "I am deeply humbled to receive this award. To learn that multiple students took the time to speak so generously about my teaching and my support for them means the world to me. "Receiving the award in my first year teaching at UCI in the School of Education is, again, very humbling, and I hope to continue being able to make a difference in the lives of students by teaching here at UCI for many years to come." Goldberg expressed gratitude to his UCI colleagues for their support, particularly Hansen. "She has cultivated a supportive environment in which to help lecturers be the best educators in which they can be," he said, "and providing me the opportunity — and having the insight — to allow me to teach courses that match my own expertise and professional interests." |
Guifoyle was named the 2022 School of Education Dean's Honoree. "Susan Guilfoyle has been an integral part of the UCI community, teaching undergraduate courses for 20 years," said School of Education Dean Frances Contreras.
"This year in particular is worthy of note," Contreras said. "Ms. Guilfoyle was instrumental in the creation of a bilingual minor in conjunction with the Spanish and Portuguese department. This is the only minor of its kind in the UC system and is a natural extension of our shared commitment to excellence as a Hispanic-Serving Institution."
"This course was created several years ago from a need I saw in our local dual immersion schools for more bilingual teachers and the growing interest in this field from our own student body," Guilfoyle said in her acceptance speech.
"To think that a decade ago I started placing two or three undergraduates interested in this field, and now seeing that develop into a strong bilingual community not only at Gates (Dual Language Immersion Elementary School) but at other schools in Orange County – that is my proudest teaching moment."
Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Program Hansen received a 2022 Inclusive Excellence Teaching Award, a new award started this year, according to Vice Provost for Teaching & Learning and Dean of Undergraduate Education Michael Dennin.
"It's a very special award because we're able to recognize instructors that create a particularly inclusive learning environment, promote growth, and scaffold our students' success," Dennin said.
"All teaching is about inclusive excellence. We felt it was really important to highlight those who are at the leading edge of this so other faculty can see who to talk to and reach out to, and continue to increase the inclusive excellence in their own classrooms."
