Research and Practice
Socorro Cambero is a doctoral student committed to improving the experiences of historically marginalized aspiring STEM teachers. She studies the process of becoming a social justice oriented STEM teacher, especially for Women of Color. Her work is centered on UCI CalTeach, a 4-year baccalaureate plus credential STEM program. She organizes, leads, facilitates and studies spaces that can promote equitable teaching for future STEM teachers. These spaces include reading circles, group dialogue and critical reflection journaling. She also works closely with Naehee Kwun, the CalTeach Network Coordinator, to organize and facilitate an affinity space that meets monthly for Women of Color STEM Educators that are either current CalTeach students or recent CalTeach alumni. The aim of the affinity space is for current and future teachers with shared identities to build community and create space to envision and collaborate on actionable steps to create socially just classrooms and schools. Socorro also pursues research that explores where first-generation college students accrue cultural and social capital while navigating higher education.
Socorro also mentors undergraduate students in research. She works closely with Dr. Doron Zinger, the director of CalTeach, to organize a CalTeach Research Lab. In this space, she collaborates with CalTeach students pursuing research projects ranging from exploring future teachers' practices that create welcoming environments for queer youth to projects focused on documenting the skills that teachers attain in extraccuricular activities and how they translate such skills in their classrooms. Socorro hopes to continue learning and working alongside undergraduate students pursuing opportunities driven by their interests in some form in her future career.
Socorro is a recipient of the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. As well, she has received the Eugene-Cota Robles Fellowship in support of her doctoral studies at UC Irvine. Socorro is part of research teams that were awarded UC Irvine grants to support the research, including from the Office of Inclusive Excellence and the Center for Research on Teaching Development and Practice.
