Alumna to join Mathematica Policy Research as policy researcher

7/14/2020

In August, alumna Tutrang Nguyen (Ph.D. ‘18) will join Oakland-based Mathematica Policy Research as a policy researcher.

Currently, Dr. Nguyen is completing her two-year Institute of Education Sciences postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning, University of Virginia Curry School of Education, with Dean Robert Pianta and Associate Professor Daphna Bassok.

During her postdoctoral position, Nguyen’s research focused on identifying and accurately measuring essential features of early childhood education settings that support children’s development and learning, and explored how they can be brought to scale successfully.

At Mathematica, Nguyen will continue to work on projects related to early childhood programs and policies to support the optimal development and learning of children from birth through the early school years.

For her doctoral work, Nguyen specialized in Educational Policy and Social Context (EPSC). Her research explored how particular aspects of early education programs support children’s school readiness gains, especially for those from low-income, ethnic minority backgrounds. She was advised by Distinguished Professor Greg Duncan.

Mathematica partners with federal agencies, state and local governments, foundations, universities, professional associations, and businesses in gathering and using data, surfacing evidence that guides decisions in areas ranging from health, education, child welfare, and family support to nutrition, employment, disability, criminal justice, and international development.
