SAUSD Arts Forward Artwalk features MAT alumna and her student artists

9/2/2020

Santa Ana Unified School District is hosting the first virtual SAUSD Arts Forward event on Saturday, September 5, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

Four of the featured artists are Century High School Drawing and Painting instructor Nena Kellar (right) and her students Gricelda Gallardo, Emmanuel Hernandez, and Joseph Mino.

During summer 2020, Kellar, a 2019 graduate of UCI’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, hosted a summer enrichment class for Century High School students called "Create at Home." Kellar posed artistic challenges and encouraged students to address serious topics that were important to them. Gallardo, Hernandez, and Mino used their summer experiences as inspiration for the art they are showcasing on Saturday.

“Our students are cultivating their voices and have some powerful thoughts to share as they respond to the world and events around them through artistic expression,” Kellar said.

Additional information about the Digital Artwalk is available here. On Saturday, viewers can access the even through the Facebook connection, on Channel 31, and posted on the SAUSD Arts Youtube Channel.

About the Student Artists
Gricelda Gallardo is a 10th grade student at Century High School, Santa Ana. She would describe herself as both an introvert and extrovert who loves animals, reading, coloring, and watching educational videos on Youtube. In the future, she hopes to become a veterinarian or politician who actively helps her community as well as others. Her ultimate goals in life are to help those in need and to make others happy.

Emmanuel Hernandez is 15 years old and is currently a sophomore at Century High School. He is sincerely interested in the arts, investing his time in music and drawing. He is also a part of Century’s orchestra and can play the violin and viola. Someday he would like to be an animator at an animation studio, such as Disney or Pixar Animation Studios.

Joseph Mino is 16 years old and currently in his senior year at Century High School in Santa Ana. He likes to create art and watch movies (at the cinema, on DVD, and streaming). He is interested in creating animated movies in the future or working at an animation studio.
