CalTeach and Global Sustainability students collaborate to showcase research at fall symposium

1/9/2020

CalTeach and Global Sustainability undergraduate students presented their research on the theme "Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science" at the fall poster session "Sustainability Goes to School" on December 11.

Student posters, which
summarized group work on lesson plans for secondary-school students, featured sustainability topics aligned with the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards

The poster session provides students with the opportunity to share with colleagues and faculty the complex process of designing lessons that are driven by specific learning objectives, are informed by learning theories and research on equity and inclusiveness, and include formative assessments.

"I have been engaged in collaboration with Associate Professor Jessica Pratt from the School of Biological Science for several years now," said Associate Professor of Education Rossella Santagata, CalTeach instructor (pictured right). "This interdisciplinary collaboration has served us well—addressing learning goals we have for our two groups of students."

  • Ocean Acidification and its Consequences
  • Impact of Water Usage in Earth's Environment
  • Human Effect on Climate Change
  • Global Climate Change
  • Analyzing and Developing Solutions for Air Pollution
  • Exploitation of Energy Resources

The CalTeach Science and Math Program is a collaborative program among the UCI Schools of Biological Science, Physical Science, and Education for undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors interested in exploring a career in education. Students complete both a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and a California teaching credential in four years. Read more here.

The interdisciplinary Minor in Global Sustainability trains students to understand the changes necessary for human populations to live in sustainable relationships with the various ecological systems, resources, and communities of this planet. The departments of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Earth System Sciences, and Planning, Policy and Design provide academic oversight for the minor, with extensive course support from additional programs. Read more here.
