Master's student receives Dean's Scholarship at 2019 MAT Scholarship Award Ceremony

11/26/2019

Ryan Ly is a Master of Arts in Teaching candidate pursuing his multiple subject teaching credential.

Ly received a School of Education Dean's Scholarship at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.

Dean's scholarship recipients are selected for their academic achievement and commitment to developing their skills and knowledge as new teachers.

"The greatest teacher that I ever had in life was that of my mother," Ly said. "She worked three jobs, seven days a week, and still found time to attend all my grade school ceremonies, make sure that I always had clean clothes to school, and cooked an entire meal for the family. Growing up, I never took my education seriously, even when I was accepted to UCI as an undergrad, I still saw education as just a piece of paper. It wasn’t until I began doing work in actual classrooms that I saw how important it is having someone there to push you. While the teachers taught their kids academics, they didn’t stress the importance of being anything else. Education was just a tiny speck of what is needed to truly be successful."

"I was motivated to become a teacher because of my mother. She herself wasn’t educated yet she taught me more than 12+ years of school could. She taught me to work hard, be responsible for your actions, and above all else, care for others than yourself. I aspire to be to my future students what she was too me. After all, education is only useful if we teach how to use it."
