Doctoral student selected for 2020 AERA Division C "Shark Tank" Competition

2/18/2020

Hye Rin Lee, a second year doctoral student specializing in Human Development in Context (HDIC), has been selected as a national finalist for the 2020 AERA Division C "Shark Tank" Competition.

The AERA Division C Equity and Inclusion and Graduate Student committees collaborate to invite up to five selected students or teams from throughout the U.S. to participate in AERA's “Shark Tank”—modeled after the television show. One of AERA Division C’s goal is to promote and encourage emerging scholars in the field of education to conduct research addressing issues of equity and inclusion. Shark Tank competitors' research must examine inquiry into learning and instruction with a focus on the experiences of (an) underrepresented group(s) and/or international populations with cultural constructs and/or theoretical frameworks.

Lee's project - "Women STEM Role Models via YouTube to Increase Achievement Motivation" - strives to leverage YouTube to increase women’s persistence in STEM.

Lee will compete at AERA’s 2020 meeting in San Francisco on Saturday, April 18th from 4:05 to 6:05 PM. At the end of the "Shark Tank" session, the competitors, along with a live vote from audience members, will determine which proposal will be funded.

Lee is advised by Distinguished Professor Jacquelynne Eccles.

AERA is a national research society, founded in 1916, with more than 25,000 members representing faculty, researchers, graduate students, and other professionals. The organization is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and evaluation and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results. AERA's April 17-21, 2020 meeting theme is "The Power and Possibilities for the Public Good When Researchers and Organizational Stakeholders Collaborate."
