To better understand how schools apply educational theories, a case study of how one school within one of the largest US school districts used theory on an assessment survey was explored. After performing a q-sort and confirmatory factor analysis on the 34-item survey, five categories were identified that have components of five research-based theories. However, these educational theories were only partially assessed and lacked variability across respondents and time. The incomplete and generalized use of these theories likely contributed to the lack of utility of the measure for the school, highlighting the importance of accessibility and usability in educational research.
