Khamia Powell, MSW, a third year doctoral student specializing in Learning, Teaching, Cognition, and Development, has been selected as a national finalist for the 2020 AERA Division C Shark Tank Competition.
The Shark Tank competition is a critical aspect of AERA's Division C efforts to develop the next generation of scholars who are interested in studying issues at the intersection of educational equity and inclusion.
Powell will compete at AERA's annual meeting in San Francisco in April. She will present her proposal idea as an engaging pitch to the Shark Tank judges and audience for an opportunity to win a grant in support of her research.
Powell's project, titled "Colorblind Teachers Render Students of Color Invisible in Classrooms: Prospects for Racial Consciousness Development," draws upon her interests in diversity and equity, cultural competence, motivation and achievement, socio-emotional development, teacher-student interactions, teacher education, and professional development.
