Master's student awarded President's Educator Fellowship at 2019 MAT Scholarship Award Ceremony

12/11/2019

Siouxsie Hernandez - encouraging, compassionate, dedicated - is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing her single subject social science credential.

Hernandez received a University of California Office of the President President's Educator Fellowship at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.

President's Educator Fellowships are awarded to students with a demonstrated commitment to working in public schools that primarily serve students from low-income families.

"It has been my dream to become a teacher ever since I met my kindergarten teacher," Hernandez said "Along my journey, I have only encountered further signs that teaching is my calling and that I have a duty to future generations of students. It is my goal to help students develop skills in the Social Sciences that will prepare them to be future leaders. I also hope to empower students in low-socioeconomic communities, such as the ones I grew up in, so that they may maximize their potential and succeed above all the circumstances set against them. I am honored and thankful to be receiving this award. This award will help me cover my living and transportation costs throughout the program."
