Master's student receives President's Educator Fellowship

12/19/2019

Katie Key is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing her multiple subject teaching credential.

Key received a University of California Office of the President President's Educator Fellowship at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.

President's Educator Fellowships are awarded to students with a demonstrated commitment to working in public schools that primarily serve students from low-income families.

"At the beginning of my undergraduate studies, I got involved with a non-profit organization called She’s the First," Key said. "The mission of She’s the First is to send girls to school in low-income communities around the world where these girls are the first in their families to receive a secondary education."

"My involvement with She’s the First started as a co-curricular activity, but it has grown to be an involvement stemmed from a deep passion and motivation for achieving educational equity. Along with other factors, the combination of my passion for education and my experiences with program development from my public health studies has led me to UCI’s MAT + teacher credentialing program. I’m so excited to continue to learn how to appropriately and effectively incorporate a multicultural pedagogy into my classroom. I am humbled to receive the President’s Educator Fellowship award, and I am honored to be a part of UCI’s School of Education."
