Master's student awarded President's Educator Fellowship

12/19/2019

Hoai Nguyen is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing her multiple subject teaching credential.

Nguyen received a University of California Office of the President President's Educator Fellowship at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.

President's Educator Fellowships are awarded to students with a demonstrated commitment to working in public schools that primarily serve students from low-income families.

"Growing up as an English Language Learner, I struggled to understand my teachers and had a difficult time feeling comfortable in my classrooms," Nguyen said.

"My commitment to teaching is present in my unconditional need to help all students. I intend on learning from my negative experiences in order to create positive learning experiences for my future students. I hope to work with minority students so I can be a positive role model in their lives inside the classroom. This award is an extremely proud moment for myself and my parents. It shows that all my aspirations are not going unnoticed. My prior experiences consist of having a large family with 11 nieces and nephews that I grew up tutoring. I have volunteered in a second grade classroom for over three years. I was a substitute teacher for K-8 during my undergrad in Monterey."
