Umbreen Ali is a Master of Arts in Teaching candidate pursuing her multiple subject teaching credential.
Ali received a Promising Master of Arts in Teaching award at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.
Promising Master of Arts in Teaching awards, provided through a Hispanic Serving Institution grant from the U.S. Department of Education, support students who demonstrate the potential to become inspirational teachers.
"In the summer of 2018, I had the opportunity to teach a credit-recovery algebra course at an underprivileged high school in South LA," said Ali. "Having grown up with the deck stacked against them, most of my students had never developed basic math skills. From this experience, I developed an interest in working against the systematic inequalities in education. As an elementary teacher, I hope to support all students who come my way so that their abilities to add and subtract or understand what they are reading do not become yet another barrier to their success."
