Leah Barker - faithful, joyful, blessed - is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing her multiple subject bilingual teaching credential.
Barker received a Promising Master of Arts in Teaching award at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.
Promising Master of Arts in Teaching awards, provided through a Hispanic Serving Institution grant from the U.S. Department of Education, support students who demonstrate the potential to become inspirational teachers.
"My appreciation and gratitude for the role of a teacher started with the life changing impact of wise people that have taught me in my own life," Barker said. "Through serving and teaching children at my church and tutoring in a low income school district, I knew that there was nothing I would rather dedicate myself to than to guide children in the same way that I have been guided. Growing up in a bilingual household has caused me to value schools that have both Spanish and English instruction. I am very grateful to UCI for this scholarship. Thank you."
