Master's student awarded Promising Master of Arts in Teaching award

12/16/2019

Serwoo Lim - persevering, jubilant, curious - is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing  her single subject mathematics teaching credential.

Lim received a Promising Master of Arts in Teaching award at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.

Promising Master of Arts in Teaching awards, provided through a Hispanic Serving Institution grant from the U.S. Department of Education, support students who demonstrate the potential to become inspirational teachers.

"I have come to realize and respect the profession of teaching through my personal experiences as a student growing up in a low SES community surrounded by inspirational and supportive educators," Lim said. "My passion for teaching comes from the desire to honor those educators and to inspire future mathematicians because every student has the potential to learn mathematics no matter what they perceive their relationship with it may be. I hope to encourage students to not shy away from math simply because it is difficult, and instead persevere through the challenging moments and build a confidence that can be translated outside the classroom. I am honored and thankful for receiving an Enrollment Scholarship to help relieve some of the financial burden. It will also allow me to consider and prepare making investments."
