Master's student receives Promising Master of Arts in Teaching Award

12/11/2019

Peter Ly - dedicated, hyped, optimistic - is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing his single subject teaching credential in biology.

Ly received a Promising Master of Arts in Teaching award at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.

Promising Master of Arts in Teaching awards, provided through a Hispanic Serving Institution grant from the U.S. Department of Education, support students who demonstrate the potential to become inspirational teachers.

"In my junior year of undergraduate, I interned for a non-profit named Life Lab at UCSC," Ly said. "I led garden tours to elementary school children and I enjoyed my time as a garden educator! "

"I ended up serving as an Americorps member with City Year Los Angeles after graduating and came to realize that not everyone has equitable opportunities in the education system. As a teacher, I hope to bring equitable opportunities for the future students I teach and show them that science is relatable more than they think. I plan to use this scholarship to dedicate myself to becoming a more complete teacher by joining professional developmental programs and paying off my student loans. I am thankful for this scholarship given by UCI and am truly grateful and now my mom can tell her friends her son won a scholarship! "
