Joseph Aubele Authors Book Chapter on Designing Educational Environments

10/17/2019

Doctoral student Joseph Aubele co-authored a chapter in the new book Misinformation and Fake News in Education (Information Age Publishing).

The chapter, titled "From Theory to Practice: Implications of KReC for Designing Effective Learning Environments", is concerned with designing educational environments that can effectively combat misinformation and help to revise people's knowledge.

Aubele is a first year doctoral student specializing in Human Development in Context (HDiC). His research interests include reading comprehension, writing development, meta-cognition, theory of mind, and teaching methodology. Prior to joining UCI's Ph.D. in Education program, he conducted research on reading comprehension processes at the University of Minnesota with K-2 students. He is advised by Professor Young-Suk Kim.

Chapter Abstract
Picture
The Knowledge Revision Components (KReC) Framework outlines the cognitive processes underlying revision of inaccurate or misconceived knowledge. According to KReC, attempts to successfully correct or revise misconceptions must increase the activation of the correct information so that it can successfully compete with the misconceived knowledge. In this chapter, we synthesized research from the extant literature on text conditions, individual differences, and task instructions that can influence the revision process, specifically by increasing the competitive activation of the correct information. Based on our synthesis, we propose approaches for effective revision that can be implemented in complex learning environments.
