"Bilingualism and Biliteracy"

9/28/2020

Associate Professor Penelope Collins (left) and alumna Tien Thuy Ho (Ph.D. ‘19, right) contributed a chapter - “Bilingualism and Bilteracy” - to the new edition of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Educational Psychology.

The Encyclopedia brings together leading scholars in psychological and educational research to provide a common language for researchers, practitioners, and students in the field.

The Encyclopedia is a definitive, theory- and evidence-based reference work with international representation.

Collins’s scholarly interests include reading & writing development, bilingualism and biliteracy, digital literacy, academic language, and engagement in literacy. Her research examines the development of literacy skills among linguistically diverse students from kindergarten through high school, for typically-achieving students and those with reading disabilities. Her work includes the use of in-class and out-of-school interventions, as well as digital tools to support students in reading and writing.

Ho is NIH-sponsored postdoctoral scholar in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at San Diego State University. Her research focuses on the language and literacy development of children from linguistically diverse backgrounds. She earned her Ph.D. in Education specialized in Language, Literacy, and Technology. Collins served as her advisor.
