"Shifting Paradigms: From screen-free to fully digital during a worldwide pandemic"

11/2/2020

Fourth-year doctoral student Kimberly Telfer-Radzat (right) contributed a chapter to the new publication Corona Chronicles: Necessary Narratives in Uncertain Times.

The chapter title is "Shifting Paradigms: From screen-free to full digital during a worldwide pandemic.”

Telfer-Radzat is specializing in Educational Policy and Social Context. Her research interests include developing executive function skills through the arts, cognitive diversity, and improving the learning experience for all students. Professor Liane Brouillette serves as her advisor.

Prior to joining UCI’s P.D. in Education program, Telfer-Radzat taught at the Waldorf School of Orange County for 16 years, first as a remedial teacher and then as a class teacher, taking her cohort from 1st grade through 8th.

“Waldorf schools pride themselves on being screen-free (computer, phone, whiteboard, etc.) in their classrooms, instead focusing on the human connection that they believe is a necessary part of the development of human beings from children to adults,” Telfer-Radzat said. “This paradigm had to be re-evaluated in March during the lockdown. In this chapter I share my perspective as a teacher of 5th and 6th graders.”
