Master's student awarded Mary Roosevelt Honor Scholar in Teaching and Learning Scholarship

11/26/2019

Emily Cross is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing her multiple subject teaching credential.

Cross was awarded a Mary Roosevelt Honor Scholar in Teaching and Learning Scholarship at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.

Mary Roosevelt Scholarships are awarded to MAT candidates exhibiting excellence in academic scholarship who have demonstrated dedication to improving the lives and educational opportunities of students and the skills and dispositions of leadership.

"I attribute my motivation to become an educator to those who modeled what it means to be a great teacher in my educational experience," said Cross. "My teachers made a positive impact on my life by creating inclusive activities, offering a space where students felt free to ask questions and continually encouraged and supported every student. "

"As a future teacher, I strive to provide a learning environment that promotes feelings of positivity, self-worth, and being heard. Each individual's’ learning journey is different and I believe that children learn best when education is meaningful and relatable to them. I am honored to be a part of UCI’s School of Education and MAT program and to accept the Mary Roosevelt Scholarship in Teaching and Learning. This award will lessen the financial burden of tuition and allow me to focus on the skills to become a successful teacher. Thank you and go anteaters--zot zot zot!"
