Master's student awarded Mary Roosevelt Honor Scholar in Teaching and Learning Scholarship

12/13/2019

Susan Frieman - joyful, kind, and "a little wacky" - is a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidate pursuing her single subject teaching credential in English.

Frieman was awarded a Mary Roosevelt Honor Scholar in Teaching and Learning Scholarship at the School of Education's 2019-2020 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on November 1.

Mary Roosevelt Scholarships are awarded to MAT candidates exhibiting excellence in academic scholarship who have demonstrated dedication to improving the lives and educational opportunities of students and the skills and dispositions of leadership.

"For the last 15 years, I have been working in the corporate world - 'climbing the ladder' as they say," Frieman said.

"While I worked exceedingly hard to make a place for myself, I laid my head down each night feeling as though something was missing. Having my son in 2016 intensified that feeling. When I look into his face, I see every possibility that a young life has to offer. I am going into teaching because I want to help my students see all the possibilities within themselves. I feel passionately about self-reflection and expression. I want to help my students find their voices, fuel their curiosities, and spread kindness in a world that can be rather unkind at times. I am deeply grateful for the Mary Roosevelt Scholarship in Teaching and Learning. It provides financial support for me and my family as I navigate the wild and wonderful MAT program at UCI! Zot Zot Zot!!"
